Streamlining Definitions

 

To perform a search, go to the What Works--Model Processes Now Available to Download section, choose a Regulatory Area from the categories at the top of the grid, and then choose a Type of Process from the list to the left of the grid. Once you have made your selections, press the corresponding button on the grid.

Appeals:
Programs dealing with the regulatory appeals process, particularly those that make the process more accessible and simpler for the public or industry to follow.

Code Compliance Alternatives:
Codes in use by a jurisdiction which are designed to be at least the equivalent of the controlling regulatory standard.

Compliance Tools:
Programs designed to promote compliance by presenting requirements in an easy-to-understand and comprehensive format. Examples include software programs, manuals, or other means of presentation.

Enforcement Practices:
Innovative approaches to building regulation, such as unique regulatory mechanisms and multi-jurisdictional regulatory agreements.

Inspections:
Programs dealing with both the procedural and substantive aspects of building inspections, and the individuals and departments that perform inspections.

Legislation:
Programs that require legislative action for implementation, typically code modifications or programs granting an official or agency powers not held previously.

Permit Office Procedures:
Steps taken to improve the efficiency of the procedure itself, such as improving customer service, promoting better communication among departments and customers, and making procedural steps more efficient.

Plan Reviews:
Substantive or procedural improvements dealing specifically with the plan review process, focusing on unique review procedures or measures that promote good communication and efficiency.

Privatization:
Programs that empower the private sector with duties traditionally reserved for governmental entities. Examples include self-regulation, government subcontracting of regulatory powers to private entities, and government/industry cooperative agreements.

Software/Computer:
Automation tools that use computers or other devices to improve a process.

Substantive Administration:
Programs that substantively streamline an administrative process by providing less restrictive provisions, by removing redundant or overlapping controls, or by altering the approach of a regulation or process to increase efficiency and promote compliance.
