FoIP Defined
FoIP is an acronym for Fax over Internet Protocol.
Fax over IP is accomplished one of two ways:
- by use of an online service
- by use of a FoIP server on your company network
Using an online fax service makes sense if you do not have IT staff and fax only a few thousand pages a month. If you have a large group of employees who fax several thousand pages a month, it might be cheaper to purchase a FoIP server and add it to your existing network infrastructure.
FoIP servers are either server software you run on a computer you already have in place, or a dedicated server (computer) that you connect to your network. Installing your own FoIP server requires a certain level of understanding about how VoIP works, and an understanding of IP networks, routing, ports, etc.
